Planting Now?
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:44 »

What are folks still planting now?

I realise (newbie!) that I'll pretty soon have lots of plot space once spuds are out, broad beans come out, parsnips have failed etc.

Haven't really got a back-up plan, so what can I still plant directly in the ground from seed...do fancy winter cabbage, and already have swede and sprouts on the go...

Ideas please?

Ta - Phill

After finally finishing the weeding that I missed for a month, I have half a bed left,so am putting in more swede and perpetual spinach (for a friend I think its  :tongue2: )

beetroot, carrots, lettuce, radishes, I think you can still buy runner/french bean plants at the shops, not from seed but still ok  :)

Pak choi, fennel, all salad stuff really, psb, kale for winter
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

So glad you asked as I've been wondering too! :D

and so glad I read the link Peapod!  - Water when required. Your best measuring instrument for water is your finger. If the top of the soil looks dry, insert your finger into the soil. If it's dry at the tip, then you need to water.

What a brilliant tip - i always get mithered about watering - how much and when etc - now I know! Thank you! :D

All the above plus onion seeds are being sown a pinch every week or so for next year's early onions.

Serious? perish the thought.

Today I transplanted my BBC squashes and tomatoes.  No hope for the toms  too small. Squashed are good. Swapped 3 of them for 2 pumpkin plants and a few rows of brassicas   green sprouting broccoli with a plot neighbour.

Also transplanted sweet williams...  Let's face it  I have the room lolol  and the BBC beetroots.

And an aubergine that I don't have room for in the greenhouse.

So whilst I haven't sown from fresh theres still loads you can get and transplant.

BOOT SALES.  Whilst on the way back from emergency ward with my finger splint...  I did stop at a boot sale and was amazed at the variety of stuff that would be of use in the lottie.

So get out at 7 am sunday and go see for yourself.

Now...   How do I stop this bandage getting muddy?  Wheres the cond.........
