Title: Silkie chick not perching
Post by: bantam novice on October 07, 2011, 19:59
Hello there,
my twelve week old silkie chick does not seem to be able to get up onto the perch with the other chick and the broody hen.  It just stays on the floor.  I have also noticed that when mother and other chick (grey cuckoo pekin) are on the roof of the food shelter the silke chick does not go up and join them.  I don't know if this is anything I need to be worried about or is it something that is normal with Silkies?  Any input appreciated.  :)

How high is the perch?

Silkies can't fly, or even jump very well because of their feathers.

Hello Casey
Many thanks for responding  :)
The perch is about 18 ins off the floor of the coop.  I will get a lower perch so it can perch with the broody and the other chick.  I am just holding my breath waiting to see if it is a hen or a cockerel  ::)  I have heared that you cannot tell with silkies until they start to lay or crow so I am hoping for an egg  :D

You may find that non of them will perch very well. I have 3 Pekins and a Wyandotte bantam and they all prefer to snuggle up in the nest boxes rather than perch, although in the run they have a tree branch that I put in and they quite like to jump onto that for a while.

None of my Silkies ever perched, though the last one that I still have, sometimes enjoys perching on a small branch that is just lying on the floor of the coop.
