Title: Guinea Pig feed bowl that won't tip over!
Post by: maxibo on May 29, 2013, 18:29
Can anyone recommend a food bowl for our piggies that won't tip over?  Its something they've only just started doing.  I thought at first it was because we were giving them 'gerty' food and they were picking out the best bits.  We've switched them to 'excel ' nuggets and they are still doing it!  Naughty girls!  I've just gone into them to give them their tea (veggies and salad) and the bowl is over.  It wasn't like that less than an hour before.  Its costing a fortune in piggy food!  Cheers!

We use a brown earthen ware type bowl, the type that have rabbit, cat embossed on the side.

My piggy can't tip it but past piggies could, some piggies are just into bowl tipping out but they will clear any spilt food so don't worry too much. Mind don't leave food, and if they do cut them down slightly as they are having too much.

Thank you BQ.  I must have been having a slight senior moment  as it didn't occur to me to get a heavier bowl.  Doh!

Our old rabbit used to throw hers down the ramp every night. It never broke so they must be well made

Second that. We used to use that type for piggies (and rabbits). :)

Never managed to find one with guinea pig embossed on but it's fine as cheese the guinea pig can't read. We didn't name him.

My rabbit went through quite a few bowls doing this  - maybe she threw them with more force as they were the mason cash ones!!  She has a shed now so there's no where for her to throw the bowl down to!!!  I don't know so much about piggies but you don't always need to use a bowl at all, you can dispurse the feed amongst some fresh hay for them to forage the bits out (keeps them amused for longer!)

Exactly, they can't read. :) Ok, if you didn't name him cheese, do you think you'd prefer if he was named andeel pie? :D

I am allergic to cheese and my son is allergic to guinea pig hair just makes me laugh. We used to have a pony who's whole name was lily wernderris lala what on earth, we didn't name her either but at local shows had to use her full show name.  ::)

I feel slightly embarassed at having asked such a daft question .  I am quite happy wandering around large 'pet emporiums' looking at all sorts of stuff to spend my money on for our furbabies.  There was I thinking there would be some high falutin' doodad I could buy our girls.  Uh no, just get a heavier bowl, dopey!

I'm not sure whether my piggies can read or not.  They are quite partial to their pen being lined with the Telegraph newspaper.  If I use tabloids that I fish out of the recycling bins, then I always make sure there is nothing rude or inappropriate on the top layer.  I wouldn't want to corrupt their innocent minds.  I know they aren't too keen on the sports pages being on the top - they always chew these pages but not others .

The vet advised me to use a hay rack and to use shredded paper or such like as bedding.  Did they eat the hay from the rack?  Not on your nelly!  They just glared at me for 2 days before I buckled under the pressure and went back to hay for bedding and eating.

I think they are ganging up on me for a laugh.  I shall try and out wit them by sneeking in a heavier bowl when they are out having cuddles.  ;)

I have four hay mangers, to be honest they were the biggest waste of money ever.  ::)

Mine didn't rate them at all but they will eat cabbage leaves from them.

Our rabbits have a metal bowl so it doesn't matter when they throw it around (in fact it's part of a game but Bert usually manages to brain Pea with it at some point which is when the bowl gets removed from the cage!)
Yup - I agree that hay mangers/racks are a complete waste of time. We have another much larger metal bowl that we put the hay in - the rabbits seem to enjoy standing with their front legs in it while they chomp on the hay. Again it occasionally gets thrown around by Bert (it's obviously his thing!) but it seems to do the job.
(ps Our chickens like Motorcycle news in their coop - just the right size and they can catch up on MotoGP while laying an egg!)

Isn't it cute that they all have their own little characters!? Our piggies (Sugar and Rudy - I know - they sound like a couple of las vegas hookers...) are totally different.  I think it is Rudy knocking the bowl over.  She is naughty and loud!  Everyday from around 5pm when I start rattling about in the kitchen doing dinner she will 'assume the position' of front legs planted firmly a shoulders width apart and 'wheeeeek, wheeeeeeek, wheeeeek so loudly for their veg I fear she was do herself an injury.  She doesn't do it any any other time of the day!  Sugar on the other hand is very sweet, loves being bathed, having piggie footcream rubbed into her tootsies and doing the 'nose gazing' thing with her little feet on your chin staring into your eyes. We rarely hear a wheek out of her.  The cat and dog are the subjects of a whole other thread.......

I've given up on hay racks too (they can be a danger if a rabbit or piggie manages to get a foot stuck through the gaps in it - but then there are dangers to most things).  My bunny currently has her hay stuffed into a log thing (hollow middle with holes in the side), I think it's intended for hamsters but I adapted.  Toilet rolls are good stuffed with hay too - you can always hide some tasty treats in the middle!

Our old daffy pig used to almost scream, I nearly took her to the vets when we first had her, then we realised that was just her way. Noisy girl. She could wake up the neighbours five doors away and I joke not. We Used to have to leave all the curtains and blinds closed until a decent time because once she saw life everyone was woken up with her yelling.  she was the most vocal pig I have ever had.

A heavy bowl with the base wider then the top, sometimes helps too.

Please can we get this chat back on topic - it was supposed to be about guinea pig bowls.
If you wish to start chatting about horses then please start another thread as it is unfair on the original poster, thanks.
Have now split all the off topic posts into their own thread named after the pony in question.
