Hi,
Our show is in September in Berkshire. We are looking to add some classes specifically for children. What was the most popular class at your show?
I have searched a bit on this forum and 'the 'dinner plate' class' came up. Rules seem to be 'Display whatever you like from your plot on a dinner plate - no bigger - and everyone gets a certificate with an erudite comment written on it, no winners and no losers. Fantastic for the kids'
Any other ideas?

fruit/veg animal/monsters - it can be very competitive as an adult category, but I found that everyone loved seeing what was entered in the children's category. Decorated cupcakes - only the decorating is judged so it doesn't matter if someone else makes the cake and tub/ plate gardens. The main thing is allowing children to be creative IMO.
Hope this helps

A jamjar of flowers from the garden/allotment
The prettiest vegetable you have grown yourself
A "rainbow" plate of fruit/veg
Whereabouts will your show be, icbradley?

We had a small container garden, tallest sunflower and best scarecrow for children to enter.

Thanks for all the ideas. We had already planned to do the scarecrow competition. I like the sound of a garden in a seed tray, the fruit/veg animal/monsters and decorated cupcakes. The vegetable show includes a class called 'The Most Fantastic Fruit, Vegetable or Flower'. Nice and vague and gets people talking!
It is the Wargrave Apple Day Show. We are trying to get a sponsor for the marquee but no joy just yet so 'show' is pushing it a bit. Though last time we did have over 200 votes for the People's Favourite Vegetable competition (like the RHS) so it is supported locally.

Do you have a local Rotary Club or something similar? They are often very helpful with events.

In addition to those already suggested....
Painting/drawing of a flower.
Collage/picture of natural materials.
Model made of recycled materials. Theme set each year e.g. spacecraft, boat, castle.
Photograph with the theme...... e.g. my favourite thing, anything red, flowers, insects
Gingerbread man
Biscuits
Brownies

Tallest sunflower is a good one, there's a trophy you can easily acquire through local trophy shops, amazon, ebay etc.
Sadly, the adults competitive spirit soon takes over the category and a child gets nowhere near winning.
