Courgette mystery explained...
« on: October 01, 2010, 15:18 »
I grew two courgette plants in identical, large pots with the same soil. They both did great initially, then one started having problems, with rotting fruit and dry leaves.
Yesterday I pulled both of them out and lo and behold, in the pot where the sick courgette was I found about 20 large, fat rose chafer grubs, all around the roots. The roots looked very small, especially compared to the other plant.
I put the grubs out in a tray hoping the birds will help themselves, but to my surprise there has been no taker...
I guess my excuse is that I'm a beginner, but it never crossed my mind to check for them when the plant started having problems...

You just never stop learning at this growing game. There's always a challenge or two to stop us getting bored. I have never seen a rose chafer grub so I am going to look it up on the internet for future reference. Does anyone know what else chafer grubs attack?

They look quite revolting  :)
Mind you, Fisherman, I bet they'd make good bait for fishing!

If they attack my veg I will give them try :D
Either that or feed them to the chickens as I'm sure they will eat them. They eat everything else :D

Gross!  I've found a couple of creatures that looked very similar to those but not exactly the same.  A few months ago I might have just hidden them in the overgrown part of my plot and hope that they made their own way off but I find I'm developing a slightly cold streak... the two I've found have been dispatched by a swift downward stroke of the spade, squishing them flat.  Probably not how I'm supposed to deal with them.
