Title: Oh no! Not another Ploy tunnel thread!!
Post by: Carlh80 on June 10, 2020, 13:41
Hi sorry to start another poly tunnel thread. I’ve gone through most if not all the threads on here about Poly tunnel construction.
Got 90% of the gist but have a few questions... sadly I think I know the answers to some but just want to know if they’re are deal breakers or not. So here goes.
I want to build a poly tunnel in my back garden gets a lot of sun considering it’s a crowded estate.
So Picture 1 is where I’d like to place the tunnel (excuse the mess). I’ve read up that it should be facing South. So my concern is (pic 2) my garden slopes from North to South. The area I want to put it is kinda north/west of my garden.
So, question 1: what is meant by south facing?? Should the tunnels doors be facing south (pic 3) or the sides of the tunnel? (Pic 4)

I don’t think the corner is best suited but is it totally pointless placing it in that position? Bare in mind the majority of sunshine comes from this direction of the garden (pic 5). The other option would be wait until my tomatoes have finished fruiting and move a raised bed (pic 6) and place the tunnel in the opposite corner that seems to get a lot of sunshine but then is kinda in the way.

I’m only thinking of growing tomatoes Maybe peppers, chilliest etc for longer and start seeding earlier etc.

Apologies for the long post, but is there a point in going to the effort (I’d have to level the ground as it slopes a bit. If the location means it’s not fully south facing. Either corner you’d loose one possibly two sides due to fencing.

My small greenhouse is in the NW corner of my garden, with an 8 ft hedge behind the north side and trees behind the west side. It gets morning and afternoon sun, although it's in shade from about 4 in the afternoon. It's not the sunniest place but I start all my seeds off in there and grow a few toms and peppers.

Seems as if yours will be about the same? So should be fine, we can't all find a 'perfect' spot  ;)
