creosote sustitute
« on: September 18, 2009, 00:30 »
how long do I have to wait before I can re introduce my hens back into their home, after painting the inside with a creosote substitute.
I have read conflicting opinions and so am unsure!, some people say as soon as it dries, some say at least 2 wks, we have had a red mite infestation and after reading this forum I have decided that this is the best course of action.
I use diatom, poultry shield, and various sprays but still have them.
Any information anyone can supply would be very grateful.

I have been told that fake creosote doesn't affect red mite, only the real (semi-banned) stuff. I'm off to buy a blowtorch, that will affect 'em! 8)

The creosote I bought from scats, is called creosote not creocote, as far as I can see it is a good as the old stuff but not as thick, it seems to have done the job.

We do ours as early in the morning as we can, that gives the rest of the day for the treatment to dry our thoroughly before the hens decide to go to bed.

Hi Michelle.
Thanks for your reply about the creosote for my redmite problem, I have dusted again with Diatom and creosoted around the door and even tarred the edges of the felted roof, just hope the birds will be ok, I have orpintons and marans, also legbarsand leghorns, also 3 darling chicks we bred ourselves which of course is in a seperate house. We are waiting to get some croad langshan birds but a little difficult to get so far and copper headed marans, not much down here in sunny Dorset, we only have 17 chucks at present but really got the bug in more ways than one LOL,
many thanks for your help,
Marcia x

Hi Mark,
we took your advise and started with the creosote early it was dry when our chucks went to bed, but was still a bit smelly so fingers crossed they will all be ok.
