I could put them on the grass but thought they may just make it into mud in a day or two.  Should I put them on something and lay straw for them, which would be easier to clean?
Help.. Where do you think would be best?

If It is movable I would say the grass, you can 'rotate' the area so that it doesn't turn into mud. Then they can scratch, forage and do all that comes natural.

If you're going to move the coop and run about fresh grass don't forget it will take a long time for each area to recover. You might be better leaving it in one place and putting bark chipping down once the grass has gone. I gave up moving mine around as the garden was rapidly becoming several bald areas. They're perfectly happy in the one spot and love scratching through the bark chips for insects etc. and I let them free range for a few hours each day.
