Hi all. I have bought several bags of compost recently that have had amounts of mould in them and have not worried unduly. However the bags I bought today seem to have a layer of white mould all over the compost. I know it is not a good idea to inhale the spores but just wondered if the mould does any harm, particularly to the veggies I grow to eat. I can't find anything online to suggest it's harmful and tell myself that moulds grow in soils everywhere with no problem but just wondered if any of you experts knew differently.

It happens when the compost was packaged damp in an airtight bag. Personally, I wouldn't worry because once the compost is spread (and yes, do not breathe it if possible - try a painter's mask) it will dry out and disappear.

You might want to mention this to your seller so they can let the supplier know there's a problem.

Its because they have used green waste and if no air then mould and heat, then mould will always set in. Don't worry, just mix it up.

Ok, thanks guys. OH has given me a mask to use. I'll  tip it all out and give it a mix.
