Dratted flies
« on: April 05, 2011, 21:53 »
I have got those perishing little flies (can't remember what they are!) in my compost. It has only happened since I opened a new bag.
It is causing some concern as they are flying out of the pots of chillies on the kitchen window, as well as in the bedrooms.
Google suggests Provado bug killer - but do not want to spray my veggies.
Anyone know how to get rid of them without chemicals please.

Thanks

Elaine

Fungus gnats?

Probably the compost is too damp.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Are fungus gnats the flies you get in the kitchen in the compost bin? I always thought they were fruit flies (drosophila)?

Irritaing little black things that move around when I haven't got my specs on!! I know the very things.   :tongue2:

I use yellow sticky fly traps about 7cm by 15cm long and hang them down just above the seed trays. For some unknown (to me) reason the flies love yellow and "stick" around on them.

Chemical free but take care not to get stuck to them yourself.  ::) I've lost several stray hairs that way and I've not all that many to spare!  ::)

Thanks for the replies, am off to look for almond oil, or sticky yellow fly traps, or both, before hubby says its not hygienic to have plants in the kitchen!
I am watering the chillies very sparingly anyway - after reading last year on here that they do not like overwatering. Just a few more weeks and they can go out to the greenhouse.
Learner, if I did not have my specs on I would not even find the kitchen
I have tipped my bag of compost into a storage bin, and I noticed when I took the lid off that they are in there too. Ho hum!

Thanks everyone.

If you have a really warm day try putting all the plants outside for a bit of fresh air... You may find the flies decide to stretch their wings and have flitted when it's time to bring the plants back indoors again.  ;)

Try here:- Fly Traps on-line but many companies sell them!  ;)
