Just a thought, If yours is a new plot then it might be best to wait a season or two before you put down permanent paths and beds.  Sometimes you don't always know how you are going to use the plot until you have worked it for a while.

Wow, freecyclers in your area are generous! We never get anything good advertised and I am a member of 2! I will have a look at gum tree though as I hadn't thought of that.

Yes, this is a new plot and maybe I should hang fire on making anything too permanent in case I don't like how I have set it up (although the thought of moving all the edged beds now is not a happy one....)

we are lucky with freecycle - I'm in the 3 local groups - even had 2 cars on it (plus freecycled my old car too).

Same here I'm surrounded and in the middle of the Banstead, Croydon, Epsom and Merton freecycle group catchment areas - I saw a greenhouse and coldframe up for grabs in the last few days.
