Horse manure loads but

Just hope I'm still able to blow my own trumpet when I'm that age...

I spread a layer of horse manure from the stables on my plot in early November, then covered it in black plastic sheet. Is that the way to go, or should I just let the elements get at it. Wasn't sure at the time, so just copied someone else's plot. It's a mixture of straw and poo.
