With us having totally re designed the garden we thought it would be nice to get a water butt, it was working fine and still is I supose but the water coming out is yellow. It doesnt smell of anything, any ideas?

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Was butt recycled ?? if so what industry or previous use did it come from.
Is water in it simply moorland water that can be a bit off colour unless filtered either from peat or iron etc.

It should be ok on established plants but don't water your tender seedling babies with it just yet. First try it on something you can stand to lose.  Did you rinse it out first  :)

That's very odd to have yellow water especially after it was fine for a while. Can someone get up to your roof & eavestroughs to see if there's something that shouldn't be there affecting the water?

Is there any corrugated iron or rusty gutter and down pipes involved or is it all plastic.

Icelandic dust ?

Like 8doubles said, I'm pretty sure it's volcanic dust. Some times in the summer if it rains, we often get Sahara dust (red).
I wonder if yours has a high sulphur content? might be good at stopping damping off disease! ;)
