Is something eating my potatoes?
« on: September 23, 2011, 21:45 »
Just harvesting my main crop potatoes as the tops are just dying back.  I have some huge potatoes and lots of them.  They are Sarpo Mira and Maris Piper.  Whilst some are green from being exposed to the daylight, others have a couple of other problems such being eaten, or  having holes in them.  Is it slugs??? or some worm creature??  I have tried looking it up on the potato sites that are advised on the FAQ page but couldn't find a match.  Some of halums look hollowed out ( greedy bugs  >:( ) I'm going to lose a lot of the crop.  Its never happened before - I think the soil is infested with something.  Its a bed that was created from where some tree roots stood.  I don't think I will plant potatoes or root veg there for a while.
Any advice or kind words of wisdom most gratefully received?  :)

How big are the holes?  Could be wireworm or slugs.  The green spuds are entirely due to not earthing up properly as you probably realise.

My experience of Maris Piper are that they are slug food (along with King Edwards) so they are definitely not on my list of "grow again".  Touch wood I don't seem to be plagued by wireworm or eelworm, so always choose varieties that are slug resistant.

Did the bed used to be grass? This would tend to suggest wireworm as they usually feed on grass roots, but seem to like potatoes as well :(

I'm guessing you mean some of the tubers have been hollowed out, not the haulms? (why worry about the haulms at this stage?)
If thats the case, then its more than likely slugs.
You could try nematodes next year?

Its wire worms which I have identified from pictures on the net and slugs - I'd never heard of wire worms before so thanks for pointing me in that direction.  I found them curled up inside the potatoes - yucky things.  There was grass there before along with other weeds.  Also found lots slug eggs - some actually inside  the attacked potatoes - not a pleasant experience really.   :tongue2:  My potatoes will be better next year.   ;).  Have a lot to learn obviously about potatoes including their anatomy !!!!! Cheers everyone :)
