Rocket from previous year
« on: March 08, 2009, 20:46 »
I have noticed my Rocket from last year has stood the test of winter and greening up again with fresh, healthy looking  new leaves. I picked some and they tasted fine, if a bit hotter (mustardy) than usual. Shall I keep them going through this season and just add new seed to fill the gaps ? :)

Mine are doing the same but they will very quickly go to seed now :( So start some
replacements off now........so you won't have to be without it. Of course you could
just let it selfseed so you never have to sow again. BONUS.
I am letting the outside stuff go to seed but have started some more in pots in the
greenhouse.

I like the slightly past-its-best stuff cooked as greens.  To me, it tastes similar to the leaf mustards (ie it loses most of the heat when you cook it), and is very nice lightly spiced.

There are quite a few different types of Rocket. Most are annuals but Wild Rocket is perennial and I am finding it much more useful than annual rocket.

Is this the one? Do you sow it under glass?
Quote
Wild Rocket     Perennial   Av 1,000 seeds
Diplotaxis erucoides
Having a stronger flavour than Eruca sativa, a strong peppery flavour and extremely tender, use in salads and stir-fry. A very health giving plant aiding digestion, acting as a tonic and purifies the blood. Successional sowing of wild rocket seeds will ensure a continual fresh supply. Can be sown all year round in milder climates or given some protection.

My rocket survived the winter too but was a bit tough.  The second March got here it started to seed I tugged it out sharpish. Same with my Mizuno. I don't remember the variety I used.  Freebie from a magazine. I've still got plenty of packets from the front of last seasons magazines still to sow.  I'll be putting them out under glass this weekend weather permitting.

I'll be making my own rocket pesto this year so I'm planning on growing blankets of the stuff.

I found that spring sown rocket runs to seed so fast that I got very liitle from it.
However I did leave some to flower and they produced and shed lots of seed. This seed did not germinate til the end of summer when I had a forest of rocket seedlings. Some of these I transplanted to a fresh plot and they grew away strongly. I was able to pick from the begining of October right through winter until they went to seed again. Even this winter we have been picking from Oct to March.
We found it so useful during the winter months when salad leaves can be scarce - in spring there is plenty of lettuce.

I have now repeated this process and not bought any rocket seed for the last 6 years!

I also use the same technique with land cress and lambs lettuce with good results
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
