5 weeks on and hen still poorly...... some Qs
« on: May 31, 2010, 20:59 »
Hello yet again
Nugget (22-24 weeks) is still unwell despite ABs and am waiting for vet to get some Tylan tomorrow
Sneezing, lots of 'snick' noises and runny nose.
Stopped laying
Appetite not as good and crop not full at bedtime But she still scratches around and loves greens.
Other two fine.
MY QUESTIONS
What else can I feed her as I don't think greens are going to sustain her, she's no longer interested in the layers pellets and i don't want her to lose weight again?

As far as i can see she's been ill since I got her so does the supplier have any responsibilities under the  Sales of Goods Act?

She is such a lovely, friendly hen who goes to sleep when i hold and stroke her so would be very sad to lose her if there is more I could do.
Thanks again.
Jane

when mine are ill and not laying I feed them with chick crumb (organic type) and add some bird multivitamins to their water (but I don't add this to their water if they are on antibiotics). You could try adding poultry spice to her layers as this will often tempt them to feed (not sure it will add anything of nutritional value to the feed but it may help tempt her to eat a little more) or even grind their layers up into fine crumb and make a warm mash with it (hot water not milk). If her throat is swollen or sore then ask your vet for some metacam or loxicom - this will help her  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

she will pass on the layers if she's got greens.  I keep mine in their run with just their layers for a few hours in the morning and then again an hour or so before bed. If she's hungry she'll eat them I'm sure

I did as suggested with the chick crumb when one of mine was ill and it worked very well  :)

don't think you would get very far with this as she isn't faulty and she is still able to lay eggs so really fit for purpose. Really if she was ill when you got her you should have returned her to the breeder straight away - you have no proof that she came with the illness and like all living creatures they can all become ill at any time.
Good luck with the tylan.
