Is it normal at this age?
« on: April 05, 2009, 08:52 »
We have a L/F S/L Wyandotte she is 5 years old and last year she laid very few eggs. This year she has graced us with one egg in early Feb.
She is in lovely condition her comb is bright red and she is eating and drinking but she is laying next to nothing.

Is this normal for a 5yr old hen?

Chickens are born with the total eggs that they will ever lay.  Like women but women are born with the all the eggs that they will ovulate. I would recon that your girl is having a rest she may lay the odd egg but that is it.  Chickens can live to 9 years old.
