Never seen cardboard ones, but what sort of cake are you looking at making?

Was the cardboard idea because you don't make cakes often and want to keep it cheap?

My Auntie used to make crinoline lady cakes using a pudding basin.  They used to make and I think you can still get them, little half ladies, like half a barbie doll to sit in the top of the upturned basin shape, then ice the 'skirt' to make it look like a crinoline.

I have a big glass roasting dish which I have used when my girls were little to make a butterfly.  I cut the cake in half diagonally, cut a little piece of the middle peak of each triangle, joined  to look like a big butterfly then iced.

or cut into squares and stacked on top of each other and iced to look like a jewellery box of treasure chest...........    oh so many things

Or something like this?  But these are Australian!

They do the cardboard mini loaf ones on  fleabay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=disposable+baking+cases&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=cardboard++baking+cases&_sacat=0)

but I've not seen bigger ones other than panettone moulds, and they're only about 8ins wide (also on ebay)

I have to say I've never seen cardboard ones, but would be really interested as they sound like a good idea for unusual shapes as the tins can be quite expensive.

I have a 12 inch silverwood tin that can be resized to any square or rectangular shape within those dimensions and then I carve out a shape afterwards.  If it's a sponge cake and a tricky shape then wrapping in clingfilm and part freezing before carving works wonders! And I agree with the pudding basin as a doll cake or even put the two halves together to make ball shapes for teapots etc.  For ideas have a look at www.cakecentral.com and search the gallery - millions of ideas!

You can get cardboard / grease proof cake moulds that you can use a couple of times and then discard. I used some at Christmas in the shape of a Christmas tree. But I got mine from a stall in Truro market that a friend of mine owns. She also rents out numbered cake tins from 0 to 9 so it might be worth checking out a local cake shop/ stall to see if they do the same thing. It's normally £5 per week with a small deposit.
Hope this helps.

You could make your own with a piece of strong card - perhaps from a cereal box. Shape it to make a 6 and and 0, staple if necessary and cover with tin foil.

I don't use shaped moulds for numbers just a square or round cake and carve them to shape.  Once they are covered you can't see the join. :)

Starry, I will give her a call and get back to you. I am sure there is somewhere near you that does the same sort of thing as a friend of mine lives up your way.

When do you need them by?

I will get back to you.
