Does anyone feed tomato plants when small
« on: April 11, 2012, 17:25 »
My tomato plants and others (cues, Aubs, peppers etc) doing well but look a bit pale. Light and tempurature are all OK. All in individual pots but perhaps a bit crowded as space is at a premium. Question then please --  Bearing in mind how little actual feed is in most composts these days does anyone feed small plants like this ?????????. If so with what????

I feed mine when the first tomatoes have set, not as soon as the flowers appear.
Cheese makes everything better.

yes that is what I always understood to be the rule about feeding, presently some are on window cills in house and others in  6 foot by 3 foot propagator with undersand heating cables and glass sides and top  in greenhouse, I suspect low light levels in recent bad weather not helping

I suspect you answered your question in your post!

but perhaps a bit crowded as space is at a premium.

They'll be fighting for light and nutrients. Extra feed won't help if they can't get the light.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I tend to pot on into slightly larger pots maybe three times before final planting so they get a new burst of compost each time which hopefully keeps them happy for a while

I think Monty said in one of the progs, last year that if the plants are in the original sowing compost for  a while and you can't pot on that you should give them a diluted feed of a general purpose soluble fertiliser.  :)

For you here it is again. Fertiliser would buy me time. I wont pot them all on as I would have to pot over 100 of them and I would lose the will to live   ;)

I do this too. I then feed them when the first truss is set.
When I put them in their final places I use a mixture of good all purpose compost and manure - they seem to like that.
