Any date growers?
« on: October 24, 2016, 11:40 »
Hi

A little worried on googling this subject heaven knows what site I could end up on , think safer on this site. A friend has given me 4 date seeds from Cyprus and I know he will be asking how I am getting on with them.

Has anyone grown them and if yes what do you do with them, apart fromm keep warm I suppose :D
:D I garden therefore I am

A few years ago I took some seeds out of dates and planted them in growbag compost. At least one germinated, I can't remember if any others did, but it did not survive for very long. It might be worth asking your friend what conditions they like. The root came out of the centre of the seed to make a T shape, rather than at the pointed end.

Hi Azubah

Thank you so much for the links you have givn me some ideas, the person who gave me them was talking about soaking in vinegar and freezing them which did not make any sense to me.

I think I will cherry pick from both links so go with the wrapping in damp paper as that works on germinating my sweetcorn, also the distilled water not much water and a warm place and using teracotta pots to let them breathe :nowink:
