Really Swollen Eye

We have just noticed one of our ladies hiding away on her own and discovered that she has a really swollen eye. I have tried to attached 2 photos which you can hopefully see. Does anyone know if it could simply be a peck or other injury or if its something much more serious. I have already searched for similar things but every answer seems to be something different.

Hi hazelize.

Not had any experience of this but it looks infected to me.

May mean antibiotics are needed, which means the dreaded vet. :?

Wait for someone who can offer a more informed opinion.

Would agree with Rob, the vets is your best bet

Is their any liquid around the eye - bubbles :?
Is there a funny smell around the nostril area?
Any Gasping, coughing or sneezing?

yes there is a bit of bubbly liquid, she is not gasping and doesnt smell but she does have her beak open all the time cant find a vet that will see a chicken! i'll keep ringing we have separated her from the others for now

you'll need antiboitics from the vets asap. shes has a cold infection the same as mine have just had , i lost 2 to this but the others have survived.

There is a drug I use called LS-50 it is a mixture of Lincomycin and Spectinomycin. It will treat both Bacterial and Mycoplasmal infections such as CRD. A trip to the vet is essential but you might suggest this drug to him/her.

thanks poultrygeist, towcester is only about 3/4 hour so that will be fine i've tucked her up in a cat box for the night and will whizz her off in the morning, i'll keep a close eye on the others tho i hope they dont all get it :cry:

one of my girls had this last year. it turned out to be a respiratory tract infection and the vet prescribed a liquid antibiotic to add to their water to treat all of them. can't or the life of me remember what it was called though...

i know it wasn't licenced for use on chickens but as long as i consented he was able to prescribe it. even though her eye didn't go down totally for a good few weeks, the week's anti-b's course worked a treat

For most upper respiratory infections vets commonly prescribe Baytril (oral or IM) tylan injectable or for addition to water. This would be the same for an underlying trauma too. They are both effective broad spectrum antibiotics.
It does look look the eye and sinus are infected. There are a couple of common infections it could be and treatment would be with the same antibiotic.

baytril an tylan is what i have had for my girls , and thanks to ppl on here i was able to tell the vet what i needed

think he was quite impressed with me .

an the girls on reception said they will be calling me for advice soon and not the vet as i am picking up all sorts of things about the girls .
