Last year I had a fantastic Onion crop from sets.  This is what I did, about 10th March gave the area a quick dig over and a fine raking. Then added all the lovely compost from my dalek and raked that in.

Then late March I sowed my Sturon sets using my index finger as a dibber, don't force the set into the ground because this will damage the root system make a hole with your finger and place the set into that with just the very top millimetre showing.

To ensure you can weed around them sow  8 inches between each set and 18 inches between each row. I know that's a lot of space but its worth it  in the yield you will get. In dry spells make sure you water the base of the bulb really well (not the leaves just the base of the bulb) Keep the area free of weeds this is important because you don't want your bulbs competing with weeds for space, nutrients or water.

On the longest day I put a small circle of grow more around each bulb , when I did this last year they really bulked up.

So that's it , I know it sounds a lot of messing but its not at all because its all spread over a season of growing

You'd need to plant the sets about 1 to 1-1/2" deep

Stupid question I know but, is that 1 to 1-1/2" from the tip to the top of the soil or 1 to 1-1/2" from the base of the set to the top of the soil
