Speckldey hens anyone?
« on: May 16, 2009, 11:25 »
Hi all,hope all's well.
Still waiting for our eggs to hatch,12 days and counting! :nowink:
I was wondering if anyone here has speckledy hens, and if you do what do you think of them?Would they be suitable for a newbie like me?I've read that they're friendly, and good 'garden' birds.
The thing is that our friend's broody Rhode Island Red is hatching out some Amber Links for us,and depending on how many 'girls' hatch,I was thinking of adding a point of lay Speckledy when they're ready to move to us.They just seem to be such attractive little birds, but I don't want to do anything that might upset any of them.(I'll be rosey myself soon,am so anxious not to do the wrong thing )
Any ideas,suggestions?
Thanks,Sarah

I have a speckledy, a sussex and a ranger - the speckledy is probably the least sociable  (with us that is, not the other hens) of the three but that could be just a one-off although they are Maran based and I heard Maran's aren't that keen on being handled. If they are ranging she is the hardest to spot if that is a consideration, especially getting towards dusk - a pale coloured hen is great for visibility :) And mud   :(

My speckeldy is top hen of 3 the same as above, good natured and does not boss the rest about until they peck each other or steal her food. The rhode i r can be downright nasty with the l sussex. L sussex was the wildest and is now the tamest.
Think you get good and bad in all breeds so best of luck. :)
