Cucumber / grey mould question
« on: July 24, 2012, 11:42 »
Hi everyone

I've got a mini cucumber plant 'Diva' in my 6x4 greenhouse which is reasonably happy (by cucumber standards that is!).  I grew the same variety last year very successfully.  Towards the end of the season I started to get some grey mould but the plant continued ok until I took it out in October.  This year the grey mould has reappeared, about two thirds of the way up on the main stem.  Leaves above it are looking a bit limp but everything below is looking fine and healthy.  If I take off the top section to remove the mould, will my cucumber plant re-grow again or will it keel over in shock and I lose the whole thing?

I've had 4 cucumbers so far off it and I'd hate to think that was the end of my season already!

Take the top off and hope for the best, it is all you can do at this stage.

All this wet weather has caused a lot of mould problems this year, some of my tomatoes have very few leaves on  :(

This time in the season, the plant might just grow a new shoot from the leaf joint below where you cut it, and off it'll go

I've had this problem in the past and was told to spray the leaves with 1 part milk to 10 parts water. It worked.

That's the usual treatment for mildew rather than grey mould

Well just to say that I removed the top third, and since then I've got several healthy sideshoots coming up with flowers on already.  Another couple of weeks and I reckon that I'll be eating cucumbers again!

It is probably mildew that's on the cucumber leaves.

H Aunty...I've haven't got a mildew problem at all.  I think it was allot2learn that thought I had a mildew problem by mistake.  Thanks anyhow.
