'bananna' shallot planting depth
« on: March 20, 2010, 14:13 »
Hi.

I've always planted shallot and onion sets with the tops just peeking out of the soil. The instructions on my 'Jermor' shallots say to plant 1" deep but most sets are over 2" long.

Do I just plant them as for normal shallot/onion sets or should the top be 1" below the surface?

Plant as you always have. Jermor are excellent.

Ta. Thought so.

Off to the allotment to plant them now - looks like a little dry spell coming.

Cheers.

My rule of thumb is to plant the same depth as the size of bulb/set.  (Eg:  a 3cm set is planted 3cm down)

I use this method for onions/garlic/shallots as well as flower bulbs.  Never let me down yet.

Shallots and Onions need the space to swell and/or divide (and also ripen); that's not going to happen if they are planted as deeply as the likes of narcissus and lilies (minimum 4-6")

"Tops just peeking out" is just right for shallots and onions!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
