store onions gone brown inside
« on: October 04, 2009, 21:32 »
Hi Can any one tell why my red onions grown from seed have stored great while my white onions from sets are going bad. both were harvested and ripened the same. :(
Can you hear voices?

Did any of your onions go to seed when they were growing?

No none of them went to seed. I had a couple that got white rot but I disposed of them and made sure they were all ok before storing them in nets in the shed.

I don't know why either but we have the same problem with our white onions. Not all of them do this, but a few do. These ones seem to be the first to sprout as well so I make sure I choose all of them first and simply peel away the brown rings and use the rest. Our onions grow in good manured soil with just enough but not too much water so its not a rotting problem as none of the other onions are affected this way. Could just be the variety is prone to something. Love the whites over the yellows so I'll just deal with the brown bits.
