pallet path - gardener's world
« on: November 25, 2008, 12:24 »
Just watched gardener world from Last Friday and on Jow swifts plot and some of the ones on his site - it looked like he had made a path out of pallets. It looks like the took of the ends of the pallets leaving 3 or 4  pieces of wood?

I think I would like to do this but should i lay them on something else first to stop the weeds.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

Funnily enough I thought I do the same and I've just managed to get some bits of carpet to put underneath them.  Do you think he left the cross pieces underneath and just pushed them into the ground?  His looked to be awfully long though not your standard pallet

Well maybe with all the help he had they were made for him

I do believe that the cross pieces do stay on the underneath. I've got a good suppy of pallets so I could make some compost bins but I thought I would use pallets to make a main central path and some that I can freely move around the site.

I find wood is very slippery when wet, nearly came a cropper when I used one of mine as a stepping stone a few months ago coz it was wet.  don't like decking for the same reason.  I have pavers, well part pavers part grass but it will all be pavers eventually for a path on my plot.

Slippy is not good with young children.

Maybe a mix of wood chip and pallets then - i've got a few paving slabs but everyone is asking for them on freecycle so they are hard to come by.

Totally agree.... they get very slippy and eventually turn green which make them like an ice rink... accident waiting to happen IMHO..

I get cardboard banana boxes from the supermarket, flatten them out, and weigh them down with bricks until they are sodden enough not to blow away. This makes a good path that supresses weeds and rots way in a year

To help with them being slippy you can always staple chicken wire to the wood. I have found it helps a lot.

I have seen a deck made from pallets too - they used a thinner wood to fill in the gaps :) looked great. :)

why not get in touch with your local council to see if you can have the old pavers when they are relaying pathways?   I've noticed that if a path is relaid by the council they put down tarmac not new paving stones
