First real signs of spring
« on: February 20, 2007, 23:15 »
Spring is definately on its way now so lets have no more grumbling about the weather. This week I've found quite a number of slow worms lurking under boards, weed mats and such like, the wrens all sound like carpenters with blunt saws and the woodpeckers are rattling away in the tall trees.

Today I noticed one newt in the pond along with a large number of waterboatmen beetles. Strange though, the frog that was there before the snow arrived seems to have disappeared.

Ladybirds are stirring and the Crocus are flowering. It's time to get busy.

I think this weather is strange - we've not had a winter as such, maybe two weeks of it . Hardly a frost but enough rain to send Noah to the workshop.

Now it' certainly feels like spring. I just wonder how we're going to garden if this year signals a new pattern.

Some of us will adapt and some will fail. Closely observing the natural goings on around the plot enables us to better understand the changing weather, be it just seasonal or global warming. The newts and slow worms have emerged from their underground caves which they share. This means that the temperature 10-30 cm below surface level has risen a significant amount. (Significant to newts and slow worms anyway).

Seeds will also be able to benefit from this rise in temperature even if us mortals still moan about the cold.

Ribbit Ribbit!! We have froggies hard at it in both ponds - home and on the plot.  Lottie pond is always a couple of weeks ahead because its in full sun.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
