Should my seedlings grow so tall? (NooB)
« on: February 13, 2007, 14:40 »
Hi, I have just started to grow some vegetables from seed. I have planted Parmex Carrots, Snowball Turnips, White Lisbon Onions and Rhubarb in one tray - 2 seeds to a cell, 10 cells each. I have covered them with a plastic lid since the end of January and they have been kept indoors.

The turnip seedlings have grown to about 8cm and are no longer able to stand up straight! - that can't be right can it?
The carrots & rhubarb are about 6cm tall.

I can't help thinking I have done something wrong, as I haven't read anywhere about them growing so tall. I have no experience in growing anything at all, so am unsure what to do next.

Should I just wait and see what happens?

They are struggling for light I think. Repot them and plant them a bit deeper and get them somewhere light - you could probably put them outside if you keep them covered up with a bit of plastic/newspaper if it's frosty.
You might have to start again with some of them but give this a go - my Parmex carrots are doing fine unprotected outside in a pot so they're obviously not that delicate.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

If your veg is even half as quote as your quote, then you'll be doing great.  I love it.

Im with noshed on this one not enough light and too much heat. I would sow another batch germinate in the house but as soon as they are though put them outside under a cloche and you should get good strong plants for planting out when ready if you haven't got a cloche you can put them out in a day and bring them in at night.

I can believe they got too much heat, but I kept them near the window - although I had to keep turning them around cos they were all growing at 45 degrees (straining to get to the light maybe?)

We have a greenhouse (bubble-wrapped) but I though it was still too cold to keep them in there at night. I will put them out during the day and take them in at night - as advised.

I have a small plot which I intend to plant them in when it's warmer.
Will let you know how I get on...

Thanks.

feed the soil not the plants

I'm sure a Barnet greenhouse would be perfectly fine now - with a bit of fleece if frost is forecast. All my stuff would be in mine if it wasn't lying on its side at the moment.
Once things have germinated on the windowsill - get them out, unless they're really tender. It's only February as well, there's plenty of time.

Actually I started out on Xenix which is a relative of Unix.  Boy that is taking me back some, also took me ages to use windows for things like formatting floppies - I could only do it in DOS.  Forgotten most of it now but that senility for you.
