Mutant Beans!
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:52 »
As some of you will know, I've been saving the seed from my purple podded climbing French bean for some time.

Last year some of them decided to produce green foiliage with white flowers, followed by a green bean. They must have crossed with something, but probably not from any of my crops.

This year some of them have got the purple stems and foliage as normal, but are producing a red flower instead of a mauve one & possibly have crossed with the Enorma ruuner beans that were grown nearby. I've no idea what bean they will produce.

So apologies to all those who had beans off me - you may not get what you thought you would get!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They'll probably turn all purple then.

Mine have purple flowers and no beans as of yet, but they weren't from you DD anyway, so that's all irrelevant really!

The carrot seeds you sent me haven't done anything though (and yes I have sown them!). I guess I'm just destined to not grow my own carrots.

I think you should name your own newly discovered variety

Don't give up yet!  Had a load of mine with courgettes, runner beans & herbie wedges made from Charlotte spuds & pepper sauce yesterday.

Did I mention the 12oz sirloin steak we had with them on the side? (Apologies to non-meat eaters!).

The first of the Autumn Bliss raspberries just rounded it off nicely.

Might think about that once I see what the result of the inter-breeding is!
