Quality of bought farmyard manure
« on: May 28, 2023, 13:32 »
Recently bought some farmyard manure by Westland. Found a lot of what I would say is recycled Green waste in it.  While I expect this in the multipurpose compost we now get as manufacturers try to find alternatives to peat I was disappointed to find it in what is being sold as farmyard manure as well. Does anyone know if there is any regulation regarding what can be sold under the pretence of being farmyard manure?

I looked online at the label for that product.  The label refers to the material as a compost, but the name does imply that it's farmyard manure (as a vet, I can see why you would be expecting a different product).

The back label refers to something called the Growing Media Initiative (they seem to have a website), which sounds like a trade organization or council of some type, that may set standards, or at least may be aware of established standards.  That might be a place to start looking for information on applicable regulations.

Interesting.... I have no answer to your question but I'm a regular purchase of their Gro-Sure manure (when I find it on offer) and they do state no green waste on their website.

However their Farmyard Manure doesn't have this proviso.

I clearly need to keep my eyes peeled in the future for what is being sold.

Just goes to show you really should read the small print. :nowink:
Thanks for the heads up Lotty, I will have to look out for the gro-sure bags in future. :)

Honestly, it shouldn't be up to the consumer to read the small print. If it says farmyard manure in big shouty letters on the bag, then it should be farmyard manure.
