Unexpected problem with potatoes this year
« on: November 02, 2021, 10:29 »
They are too big !!

Unfortunately I live alone now, and 40% of my main crop spuds are weighing in at greater than 200gm and are too big for a single person meal - one is tipping the scales at 750gm.  These are Desiree main crop spuds.

Would I be better in future to avoid main crop potatoes or is there a variety which is better at producing smaller spuds?

King Edwards are usually consistently smaller.
You could sow later or cut the tops off earlier if you want Desiree to be smaller.

It is worth looking at Jazzy as well.  These are 2nd earlies but mature into a main if left growing, so are a  handy duel purpose crop.  They don't get too large though.

I think they are only available mail order, so if you want a potato that is easy to buy in garden centres, try Kestrel.  These are also 2nd earlies\early mains and get a little larger than Jazzy if left to mature, but not giant sized  :)

Lateral thought why not make some mashed potato with your somewhat large spuds.
Divide into portions and freeze then use just the amount you want for a meal or meals.
