Guyot wire system for Vines?
« on: June 21, 2020, 20:11 »
Does anyone know where I can buy the Guyot wire system for Vines from in the UK? I am in Leeds. What are the best value places to buy this?

I only have two vines so far as I have not been able to find them anywhere. I hope to have them growing in 15ft (4.5m) rows on my allotment.

Usually how many wires would you say is needed for growing Vines? The Vines I have at the moment are Sauvignon Blanc but I am also hoping to get Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

The standard way is to have a heavy duty stab at an angle at the end of your row to which you would have two wires fixed between them with tensioners on to tighten the wires. The vines are the planted about meter apart. You need two wires one would be at the height of the top of the head of the vine and another  about 500-600mm above that one. Of course some vineyards use additional wires to hold the berries if they use a machine to harvest them you won't so you don't  with a short row such as you are suggesting you would probably not need intermediate stakes but you could easily put one in the middle. I would say any reasonably stout fencing wire would do you as you are not supporting much. Have a look at this vid you will get and idea what I mean

Is this the sort of thing you are after?

These are very effectively tensioners. I've only used them  and the wire in the garden with the company's clips that fit around concrete fence posts to provide support for plants growing up fence panels but they have been very effective.

Thanks for the help guys.

Wooden Posts

I was going to get 5ft square posts that are 6 inches in diameter for the end posts and also ground spikes to secure them.

The posts are £8 each at Wickes and the spikes are £6.28 each in Toolstation.

Would I be able to use pointed wooden stakes instead or would you not advise this? I think I could save a bit of money on them but I would need to travel up to Ripon to get them as I don't know anywhere more local that has them. They cost around £3.25 for a similar sort of size from Mole Valley Farmers.

I don't have a Post Driver tool though that is the only thing. They cost upwards of £40 whether you hire or buy them. I do have a 12" hammer as well as a small mallet I use for pitching my tent and putting in the ground pegs.

Guyot Wire System

I have seen a Plant Training Wire Kit from S3i as well as the Gripple system.

https://www.s3i.co.uk/plant-training-kits.php
https://www.s3i.co.uk/gripple-garden-wire-trellis-kit.php

I think with the first one it does look excellent and really professional with the 3mm rope type wire but it only includes one wire so it is quite expensive. Both that system and the Gripple are just over £20 including delivery but I'd need two of the first.

I am wondering if they are both overkill though and I could save money by using fencing wire?

Would it be okay to use galvanised or PVC coated fencing wire that is 1.6 or 2mm thick? Screwfix has these for only £3 or £4 for 15m and 30m.

https://www.screwfix.com/c/outdoor-gardening/wire-fencing/cat7670001#category=cat7670001&page_size=100&sort_by=price

Would this still go into wire ropes clamps and turnbuckles or would I use something else to secure it to the posts and tension it?

I am thinking that the costs of turnbuckles, wire rope clamps, screw thread eye bolts, and the wire itself would still come out at a similar price so I may not be saving any money over just getting the Gripple system?

The only question I have about the Gripple is can the plastic tensioners be reused? I have read review comments that say the system is reusable and other comments that say the tensioners are not reusable.

The YouTube video of the Guyot system in France was very interesting they seem to be using this galvanised type of wire that looks to be around 2.5mm thick that you see in places like the lake district and in the countryside? My only concern is I always thought that type of wire was quite rigid and not easy to bend into a loop. It's a shame I am unable to see how far apart their fence posts are and how the wire is secured to them.

Cheers,
John

One thing you have to bear in mind when you look at professional vine wiring is they are supporting rows of vines 50 to 100m even longer so they need extra strength, you do not so any reasonably strong wire would do you. One other thing about staking, pine rots quicker than you can sneeze. It may not be easy but I really advise you to try and get Acacia or chestnut stakes they need no treatment and last anything up to fifty years in the ground.
