watering my blueberries
« on: May 30, 2020, 10:42 »
My water butts are empty  :(

I am going to have to use tap water for my blueberries which I have never had to do before! I live in an area with hard water so I am hoping that I wont do too much harm. Is there anything else that I can do in this situation?

Found this advice from the RHS (https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=691):

Quote
Ericaceous plants (acid-loving) are fine to be watered with tap water when rain water supplies have run out. However, over a long period ericaceous plants watered with hard water will start showing signs of chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves). Mulching with lime-free organic mulches such as composted pine needles or composted bark will help retain moisture within the soil and keep the pH low.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

My allotment pal, says to put vinegar in tap water to make it more acidic, 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water.  I have not tried it myself but his allotment is amazing an very productive.

I add vinegar, even to my rainwater, to help keep the soil acidic. This allows me to keep the pH about 5 quite easily.
