French Bean Question.
« on: May 16, 2020, 14:49 »
Because my cobra seeds were older I put two seeds in each pot. So they all germinated 😀 and now I have more beans than poles.
Would it would it work if I put two plants per pole or would that be too crowded.

Thanks

Elaine

No problem with two plants I normally put one plant plus a seed to grow and provide succession in case the first plant is attacked or fails.

I've got more climbing French bean plants than I can fit around the frame with standard spacing (a couple of feet apart). Can I plant extras in between the existing plants without growth and productivity being badly suppressed?

2ft apart, is awfully wide spacing, IMO.
Yes, maybe 2 ft between the 2 rows of canes on either side of the frame - but not 2ft between the plants in the row (or round a teepee)
RHS says

Climbing French beans
These need a support to climb up. The traditional method is to grow them along a double row of bamboo canes (use 1.8m/6ft tall canes), with 45cm (18in) between the rows. Place the bamboo canes 15cm (6in) apart within each row and slope them inwards and then tie near the top to a horizontal cane.
