Is my comfrey big enough???
« on: April 14, 2020, 17:26 »
Hi
I'm aware there have been quite a few comfrey posts. Thanks to Johns love of comfrey I thought I would give it a go as a fertiliser on the plot. However I'm wondering how big it has to be before it is cut, and do i pull the individual leaves off or take a pair of shears to it. Picture enclosed - Hopefully.

Thanks
Twood

I always took shears to mine, but let it get quite a bit bigger first.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i use a shears to cut mine. I do it when I need to use it usually. it soon comes back again. use a pair of gloves as the leaves are quite hairy!

I cut mine as soon as they start flowering all the way to the ground. As they will self seed everywhere. If you want to make fertiliser tea for this year then there is no harm in cutting them now and starting a brew. I’ve got a nettle brew on the go already

Thanks everyone for replying. i might start off a small bucket now and let two of the plants get bigger whilst it brews. Cheers so to speak! :D

This question was asked (and answered) only a few days ago cc, so I've merged your new thread with the existing thread.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I only take a few of the bottom leaves at this time of year as the Bees are coming out of hibernation and Love the flowers  :D , so I leave the flowering sections well along , then another cutting from the bottom leaves every few months.
