sunflower heads
« on: August 10, 2014, 18:33 »
Hello there all
I have some sunflowers on my allotment and was wondering what is the best thing to do with the heads ie as regards feeding the birds do I just leave them whole on the plant or what .
                      many thanks Neil Doncaster

I leave some on the plants and the finches strip them as soon as they are ripe. They love them  :D

Others I cut and keep in the shed, and then get them out in the winter at leaner times (in snowy weather for example) and tie them up on a bean wigwam or something similar for the birds to help themselves.

And a few seeds I save for next year too, although there do seem to be some that pop up unexpectedly anyway  :nowink:

A few years ago I left the seed heads on my sunflowers for the birds......and was treated to watching a particularly athletic grey squirrel chomping through the lot (the plants were very close to my shed roof which probably helped them but squirrels in 'hungry mode' seem to be able to accomplish almost anything! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
