Shed Base
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:28 »
Hello Everyone,

I have an allotment and the shed that was on plot wasnt the best so I knocked it down he he!
There is a hole  now and would like to place my new hut on top of hole so that its level with my greenhouse but not sure how to put in place a firm foundation. I have looked up online and seen a variety of suggestions. I really don't want to spend an arm and a leg on this but obviously don't want the base to crumble or not support the new shed. Any suggestions ? I have seen the railway sleepers option and a gravel base but worried gravel base will not be effective and may rot after some time. I also considered the concrete slabs option.

Any help would be great appreciated thank you!

I used paving slabs and used the gaps between to vent the air space under the floor - the timbers supporting the floor run in the opposite direction to the gaps in the slab - thus the floor vent in both directions and can dry out. It also happens to fit the 6ft x 4 ft shed exactly with the gaps.

The plastic will keep the weed out and will stop the damp coming up (acting as a damp proof membrane) the concrete and rotting the timber (well that the theory

I used weed membrane under some free slabs and have sand inbetween to keep steady.

The trickiest bit was getting the earth underneath compacted and level enough that the slabs sat fairly level on a thin bed of sand. I've allowed 15-20cm extra around the shed and kept some of the slabs to build a small patio-y bit in front of the door so I don't slip in the mud!

I just levelled the ground and added some sand in one area and raked it over and got it level then put the plastic on top rather and under the sand – you can see the timbers that support the floor and how the air can flow in both directions in the photo below
