I've now bought 3 of these wretched things and none of them have worked longer than a few days. The first 2 were battery driven and had a cable that you could run outside to get external temp as well. Both worked fine at first then just stopped working in less than a week - and yes, I did try new batteries. The last one was an old fashioned mercury type with little black bars that stayed behind to record min/max, with a reset button. Again, it worked fine for a few days, laying on my bench. I don't know if it's coincidence, but when I hung it up, as it's supposed to be, the black bars both detached themselves from the main flow and refused to go back again. Is there something about the environment in a tunnel that stops these things working or am I just incredibly unlucky?

unlucky I got a cheapo one of fleabay and it's been fine. Touch wood :lol:
It always reads about a degree colder than my ordinary one (which agrees with the local weather station) so I just bear that in mind :)

Was that a battery/digital one or an old school mercury type? One of mine (digital) was a Gardman as well, and I always expect them to be decent quality.

In the interests of scientific research ( ::)) and trying to be helpful I have just been out to my greenhouse with a magnet and am pleased to report that the max-min bars are magnetic (doesn't mean yours are, but nothing to lose if you've got a magnet!)

I hadn't thought of that. I don't possess a magnet but I'll see if him indoors has a magnet hidden in his vast collection of boy's toys.

I was in Wilkinsons today and they had a max/min thermometer.
There were 2 temp gauges one in farenheit and the other celsius
At the bottom there was a digital readout showing max and min temps
I think it was about 7.95

Don't, you'll be lucky if it lasts a week when the damp gets to it! :mad:
When it packed up I took mine to bits brutally and fiddled with it, now I get the max/min in my front room!
Someone gave me a push button type from the depths of a shed and it's working well! :)

My old U-shaped mercury filled push button one has been going for years.
Sometimes old types is best I reckon :D

+1, had it in the living room to see when the CH thermostat kicked in and out.
And then had it in when we first lit the woodburner a few years ago, went a bit OTT and got the livingroom up to 32 degrees when we had that major winter snowfall! :blink:

I think it's you. I have three mini max from ETI, the green one with one AA battery. One in greenhouse, two outside in different locations. They all work, one I had to replace after dropping it on a concrete floor.
I also have the kind you read through the kitchen window from the outside. These I've been less lucky with as the window cleaner trashes them.
Just hang it up in a shaded place outside of direct sun and leave it. In the sun the little bars on some go too high and lose their charge and don't move properly. The temperature extremes also wear batteries out. Hang the tunnel one under the staging.
