I´ve bought quite a few T & M tomato seeds ready for planting, the neighbours tell me not to bother to go to the garden centre and buy the plants there. Surely it is fun to grow your own too from seed? They think I am really daft to go to the effort of buying/planting/growing when I can go up the road to buy plants.

Definatly grow your own, tomatoes grow quickly from seed and you will only get standard varieties from a garden centre. This is the first thing I ever grew and entirely on window sills so i may be bias but even the plants smell good.
-
You have done the right thing,i ordered sungella from t&m,and sowed them last sunday.Nurseries tend to only grow certain varieties,so,the choice is restricted.
-
Too right grow your own from seed every time in my view.
Like every one say's only get the "normal" varieties at a garden centre, also the price of a packet of 200 seeds is probably less than 1 garden centre plant & you can save your spare seeds for years, tomato seeds usually keep for 7 years or so before their useless. Anyway it's so much more fun to watch your seeds burst into life, Pure Joy :D

where we did our compost into the garden we normally end up with around 20 or more self set tomatoes,
why spend money buying them when they are so easy to grow??!!
-
I can only echo what everyone else has said olive, go for it :) :)
-
And think, you'd probably only get 1 plant for the price of a packet of seeds!!
That's like Brian's Mum, when he tells her we've done something ourselves, she says why don't you just go down the supermarket, its quicker!!!
Go with your seeds girl!!!!

funny, nothing beats growing from seed.. last year I ended up taking about 50 tom plants to work as I had waaaaaayy too many, now from me doing that, loads of people are now interested in growing stuff themselves... I felt dead proud :) :) :)

I grew some from seed last summer and had about 12 plants in tubs ont he patio with the fruit ripening then we sold our house and moved to a house with a garden but there was no room for the tom plants in the car and furniture van, just managed to squeeze in the strelitzia plant as it was, I refused to leave that behind. I gave the tomato plants to the neighbours and they were thrilled with them, said later when we went back the toms were very tasty. So tomorrow my tomato seeds go in the pots :D

Sow twice as many as you need. Then sell the spare ones to your neighbours at 75% the price at the garden centre - you'll be both well pleased.

Well worth it Olive! Anyway theres no variery in the Spanish garden centres!! Let me know if you want any unusual tom seeds!

I always grow from seed, this year I decided to grow loads, trying the theory that outdoor toms poison couch grass.

never heard of that but worth a try.

is that any variety of tom or all toms i never heard of that but would be great to plant along the edge of my plot one side, i have an empty plot and plagues me with couch ,..... i wonder if it works on nettles

Hope it works for you because it never has for me, not even with heavy mulch. The mulch only weakens couch and makes them easier to pull out.

I have sown some seeds today - my first ever seeds. We have beef steak and red pear. They are all warm in the airing cupboard for a few days now... hope something happens.
-
Read it in Andy Clevely allotment book. I am giving it a go see what happens, not fussed if it dont as it is a isolated patch I am trying it on.
-
I always put mine in a bit later. If they are to early you loose the first two trusses flowers and hence the tom to the cold weather. But if you grow your own you can feed them as youngster's and sell the excess plants.

nettles are my friends frazzy, I let em grow for a bit strim em down chuck em in a bucket of water, stink the place out, feed em to my plants and watch my beauties go crazy bonkers!! best plant food ever!!!!
