I want some insect netting to provide cover for my kale and new little cherry tree. In the past I've used that stiff black stuff that seems to have a mind of its own so has anyone got any recommendations for something softer that will drape over some canes or wooden props?

Not sure what you mean by the stiff black stuff.
For general cheapo protection I would go with 2m debris/scaffolding netting. Will still let small insects e.g. whitefly and aphids, but not usually anything larger.
For total protection Enviromesh (though not cheap) or Wilko defender mesh (cheaper but often sold out - worth stocking up in off-season).

I find when putting debris netting on a cherry tree causes problems. Thinking of making a frame to go over it once cherries are forming. My tree will not get taller as broke off the leader shoot one year with debris netting. At least I didn't pay a fortune for dwarf stock :D

we found Garden Naturally had a good selection of insect netting we also bought a roll of scaffold netting from screwfix that was good value
