Title: Wartime preserves without sugar...
Post by: Growster... on October 20, 2020, 18:25
While we've made quite a bit of chutney and chilli jam this year, we've been mulling over what else we could save - there's not much now, but maybe for future years!

Then thinking about how we avoid sugar here at all costs, (except for a little fermenting purposes, well, enough for several gallons a pop, well more than that really, in fact, quite a lot more...), the conversation got round to what happened during WW2 with the severe shortages of sugar! How did all those jars get filled?

The answer may be in one of John and Val's books of course...

They used less in jam for immediate use, more for jars for long keeping

The WI got a special supply of sugar for their jam making efforts
