Title: Portuguese Laurel Hedge
Post by: Thrutchington on July 18, 2020, 16:58
Afternoon all. I have a Portuguese Laurel hedge in front of the house that's been in about ten years. This summer it is looking particularly tired with little vigorous leaf development. Is the hedge tired out or can i feed it with home composted compost, miracle gro, comfrey feed off the allotment or any combination of these? Thanks.

Comfrey feed now would help with a good dose of trace elements.  That should perk it up a bit.

The best time to mulch hedges is autumn, when the soil is still warm and has some moisture in it but is not waterlogged.  The mulch feeds the roots over winter and usually the hedge bounces back the following spring.  10 years is not that old for a hedge, so I would think it is just a bit hungry, rather than on its last legs.

Thank you for the advice, i will bring some comfrey feed home from the allotment and apply it, then compost mulch later in the season.
