Title: Anyone Use their car as a green house
Post by: Madame Cholet on May 28, 2015, 23:40
Just moved my toms and curcubits out to the car as I'm not using it for a while I'll open the window a touch during the day.

A chap down the pub said he was moving his toms to the car the other day, my first thought was 'strange thing to do' followed by
'Quiet a good idea actually' ! :)

I may be tonight loaded the car with plants from the space saver at home for the allotment greenhouse on the allotment and it's hail and heavy rain at the moment!

Looks like I may be taking them home again

No, but I do use it to prove bread. I also know someone who uses it to dry tomatoes and the like.

I  have a caravan for visitors, and it's such a nuisance when I have to move the plants out to make room for them ! :nowink:

Yes, I used my old Volvo estate for my sweetcorn and courgettes! But then I also use it to store my toddler sons toys and travel rugs to save me taking them in and out the house everyday! I was supposed to scrap it when I got my new car in Feb but it's too handy!!

I thought I was the only one doing this! We have a couple of, shall we say, 'rusty dreams' that have been here for about 20 years, for whom the grand plans have long since faded. They aren't mine (long story!) and up until their current use, I would rather of been rid of them.

We neither have money or space for a greenhouse here, and this house is not centrally heated and gets very cold... too cold for early planting. It's also awkward with one small east facing cottage living room window that only gets direct sun a few months of the year, and one small west facing kitchen window that gets a little more sun but is very cold and drafty. At best they only get a few hours direct light.

So out of necessity the boot of the rust bucket outside has become the greenhouse. I have to be careful opening it, as rusty chunks break off the boot door on a daily basis. But so far, it has raised my runners, butternut squash, tomatoes, chillies, sunflowers, chickpeas, and many other veg and plants. They are not as big as I would like, but it doesn't get full sun and there are a few trees casting shadow. Or it could be the odd season we have been having. But either way I am pleased!

Oh and I can't get the doors open as they are rusted shut.

Mine still runs but just short trips occasionally.
