Which pea
« on: May 19, 2019, 14:16 »
I always set some Meteor pea seed in late autumn in pots in the unheated greenhouse, planting out in early spring under protection. Meteor are only about a foot high, not the best tasting but very early.
This year, what I set as Meteor (From a packet marked Meteor) have grown to over three feet high and have produced a lot of pods. 7 seeds in most pods and very sweet tasting. Have picked the first pods today, end of May, earlier than Meteor normally are.  Am in East Anglia and have had frosts since peas were planted out. Any idea as to what variety I have grown?

Where are the seeds from? If its handwritten on a homemade packet from a seed swap, it's obviously more likely they've been labelled wrong than if they came from a big seed suppliers packet from a garden centre.

Not many peas get to 3ft tall nowadays, so my guess would be Hurst Greenshaft. They taste lovely as well

Thanks for the replies,

Done some research on Hurst Greenshaft and see that the pods grow in pairs as do these. That's what they must be.

Seeds were bought from a normal supplier at a garden centre. No idea which, but I did note in my diary that I set "Meteor" seeds on 21st November 2018.

Won't bother with Meteor again but will sow Hurst Greenshaft. A good lesson learnt!
