What will a chicken NOT eat?
« on: December 26, 2010, 12:24 »
After many years of spending time and money re-erecting fence and covering aforesaid with preservative, (notwithstanding amounts spent hiring son only to find he'd conned his grandmother into doing it for him), and have it scaled by chooks who take the concept of being free range too far, I have taken the plunge and have ordered a living model. To wit, one hedge.

Nice lady at end of telephone tells me hedge needs to be kept separate from chickens for at least a year, or chickens will get fat and hedge will disappear.

Ironically type of hedge ordered is 'edible', i.e. will be covered in berries, squirrels etc in autumn.

So... apart from planting electrified barbed wire or hiring a slobbering hound with a machine gun, is there anything which will grow like the clappers and act as a barrier between it and my brand new baby hedge?

Or is it back to B&Q?

How about a tunnel made of weld mesh to protect the hedge?

plant the hedge using tree spirals and canes this will protect the hedging from anything and helps promote quick upright growth.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks for the advice.

i guess since the solutions of weld mesh and spirals have been proffered, the silent answer is there is nothing which is inedible to the hungry chicken! :-)

A-ha!

They work on reverse psychology.

Please don't eat the weeds, please don't eat the weeds, please don't eat the weeds...

LOL Probably not but maybe plant some along the ground under the hedge?  Maybe put them off a bit? ;)

Mine wont touch stinging nettles!!! the hedge has long since gone, and most of the plants, weeds too, but the stingie nettles are making their bid to take over the world.  (They leave the daffodils alone too.)

Problem solved, why didn't you give all your chickens to your friends at Christmas with a packet of Paxo. Then plant a hedge, pack your bags and go on a round the world cruise. On returning home buy some day old chicks and start again. Then if the hedge does get eaten, it would have been an enjoyable rest from the critters.

PAXO!

Heartless Beast!

Actually the woman across the road has been viewing my girls, and their coop covetously. She keeps suggesting I paint it blue which just happens to be her favourite colour.

(I'm not sure she can be trusted!)

So its a mushroom hedge and a great dane with a mauser. My girls are not fazed by nettles, so good try, but...

I'll probably be posting later with tears on the keyboard wondering how 90m of hedging can disappear so quickly.
