Ducks and snow.
« on: December 20, 2010, 20:20 »
My lovely ducks seem to be coping very well with the snow and still seam to delight in splashing around in their rigid plastic sand pit, however they seem to be doing something that I've not noticed before. When we have very cold weather and there is frost on the ground I noticed they did a great deal of sitting. So, they would come out of their duck house and run around for 10 metres or so then sit, then get up almost immediately and so on. I've noticed now there is snow on the ground they are doing this even more. Are they trying to keep their feet warm? I'd love to hear your ideas.

Sounds like they're in training for the duck equivalent of the 100m sprint, run, sit down to recover for 10 mins, run, sit down to recover for 10 mins

Sorry, I'll sit in the corner ;)

mine only use a fraction of their large enclosure and as you say spend a lot of time sat down. I ensure they have good straw in their hut and if they want to go back in then they can do so. I leave grain and pellets out on demand in the hut as well. Overall they seem happy enough, came through last year OK

My ducks don't want to go in at night. I have to chase them around every night to try and shut them away.

We usually only feed corn and pellets at bedtime - they come in quick enough then.
