Video of Wonky Duckling and update
« on: October 24, 2010, 19:05 »
I've put a few videos of our wonky duckling and chicks (we had to swap toffee for another due to his aggression towards wonky) up on you tube. I'm Not overly familiar with the site as I joined today but if you search for chicksnducksnbirds as a username or wonky duckling I'm sure they'll come up. I think this is the link for wonky walking 3pk23S7HRSEfeature=youtube_gdata_player I know one of the videos for our new chick can be found at _UGnnLjyzNo hopefully you will get an idea of how wonky is getting on. He is very bonded to the chicks and hates being on his own, but most importantly is still mobile, happy and growing well!

Thanks for all the messages of support, I will try keep you all updated

Thanks!! Really pleased he's managing to get around outdoors, even if he needs his legs tethered together still. The new chick has fitted in straight away so fingers crossed!

I'm sorry that you feel I am being cruel. I have seen no evidence of pain or discomfort. If this was the case I would consider putting him down. At present he seems happy and adores the chickens as do they him. He is able to mobilise albeit slower and a bit more wonky than normal, but whilst his quality of life is good and he is pain free I feel that there is no valid reason to put him down.

not trying to be pointed or biased in any direction, just trying to learn.... as chickens/ducks and many animals are good at disguiding illness, pain and general infirmity how do you judge if the duckling is in pain?  what are your criteria for deciding if he is in pain or not?

That's a fair question. Having had a parrot and aviary I am well aware it us personality changes that tend to be the first give away and he hasn't particularly changed since I got him on day 1. He has been seen by an avian vet specialist as you might have seen from previous threads. The vet didn't think he was in pain, and he doesn't show any sign of it when you touch his leg, especially the knee where it appears to be mainly deformed. I can not be 100% certain though, but do not feel he is in a position where putting him down would be an option. He can swim and appears to enjoy his bathtime although not being separated from the chicks. He is under watch during the daytime on a regular basis so any problems can be seen.

I hope this answers your question, and I am happy to receive and listen to peoples comments and opinions albeit different from mine. I got him as his neck was to be wrung and I wanted to give him a chance at having a good life and will do what I can to ensure this

Kirstie
Ps video of a part of his bathtime is up. Sadly not the first part where he splashes around and appears to have a blast as I forgot to video it! s4uNk90bvDQsns=em

I'd probably be the same as you, and looks like you are doing a good job with little wonky.
