Noisy girl :)
« on: July 09, 2014, 15:12 »
Hi there this might sound like a really daft question but I haven't had chooks for couple of years . Got my 2 warrens nearly 2 weeks ago and suddenly today one is really noisy, kicking up a right fuss. Could this be a sign she is getting ready to lay or is that just wishful thinking ?

usually they make a noise after laying an egg - they seem to want to announce that they have done their job. Some hens though are simply noisy and want to announce their presence also they soon figure out that you will come running when they make a noise.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Has she been dashing in and out of the nest box several times a day, that can be an indicator that she maybe about to start laying

Has it been very windy where you are? The wind always set mine off cackling.

Mine used to get noisy if there was local noise. They respond to noise by making more noise. It was usually dogs barking or next door's kids that would set them off

Once we moved house, with no noisy children about, they went completely quiet

Can they see out?  Chooks like to be able to survey their territory, and if they can see it they will be reassured that all is well, so will pipe down  :D

Mine make a racket to be let out of the run so they can free range - if I have been out they are quiet until they hear me walking on the gravel to the front door and then start! They also make a racket to be put away again (with corn and extra greens of course!).  Also of course announcing that an egg is on its way or has arrived.  In fact any opportunity to let me know they are still here and available for treats...

Fortunately my neighbours are very tolerant although I am thinking of giving them earplugs for Christmas...  :nowink:
