Title: New Allotment Plot

We have recently taken over a really good sized plot.
Being a charity and in Yorkshire we obviously want to try and keep cost down as much as possible. :D
What would be your top tips for
Clearing
Growing
Composting
Weeding

We have access to a tap for watering which is great, but we would love to collect rain water too. Any advice on the easiest way to go about this?

Hi, nothing wrong with being from Yorkshire 😂, all the best people are 😂😂.
Strim really low, dig out perennial weeds. Cover with thick cardboard, soak it, cover with as much well rotted mulch as you can get up to 6” deep. Plant up. Build some huge compost bins & pile all the strimmings in with some fresh hot manure mixed through it all.  Just make the paths on the mulch so you can hoe the weeds out.

I take it that the plot is a bit neglected, on that basis.
weedkill it, strim it and compost the strimmings.
this is the important bit, water it.
Weeds will re appear. weedkill it.
Dig over, water it.
Weeds will re appear, weedkill it.
Cover with cheap black polythene till spring.
Come spring uncover each section 2 weeks before sowing/planting. water it.
if weeds do re appear either hand weed if not too bad or weedkill them.
You will then be in the same position as everyone else just need to keep on top of the weeds but not as bad as trying to grow in a previously neglected plot that has not had drastic action.
